It's been entirely too long since I posted. Can I be honest? I've been watching Stargate SG1. A lot. A lot, a lot. It may be the most distracting show I've ever gotten into. Sigh. If it wasn't so good (and if there weren't so many damn seasons) it would be easier to tear myself away.Anyway, back to the music. Michael Penn. Have you noticed my love of singer songwriters? They remind me of SG1, I can't stay away.
I actually got into Michael Penn through Amiee Mann. I saw Magnolia. If you've never seen it pick it up - it's brilliantly disturbing, has a stellar cast (including Tom Cruise in what may be his best performance ever), and has a heart-wrenching soundtrack that was primarily written by Aimee Mann (with smatterings of Michael Penn).
From there I transitioned into Michael's records - very smooth and easy to listen to. Oh and they are very very hummable. Lucky for me, I managed to see his fairly amusing SXSW performance back in 2004. Like many of my older 2003 and 2004 shows, I hadn't listened to this one in a while, but have had it on repeat for the last couple of weeks (when I haven't been watching SG1.)
If you want to get a sense of Mr Penn's lovely song-writing skills check out Brave New World - then work backwards.
If you like what you hear, be sure to check out his new best-of compilation, Palms and Runes, Tarot and Tea: A Michael Penn Collection - which is due out in mid April.

if there was ever one name i would want to see up on your fine blog then Michael Penn is it. Firstly because Michael Penn live stuff is rarer than hen's teeth and secondly because i am a huge huge fan of his literate and beautiful work. thankyou for this amazing post..its is brilliant a total joy. the last three penn albums, Resigned, MP4, and Mr. Hollywood 1947 were all my album of their year. I met Michael a few years back when he and Aimee came into a record store i was working in the day after their brilliant concert at the shepards bush empire in london (i come from london by the way) they stayed for an hour or so chatting. What a delight they both were and the way they held hands for most of the time was sweet. im a bit puzzled by your Magnolia reference...oringinally both he and aimee were going to have songs in the film but Michael and Paul Thomas Anderson fell out over something so Michael's stuff didn't make the final cut. The score is by Jon Brion (another genius). Michaels music is in other PTA films, him and Brion did the score to Hard Eight and he even has a cameo in Boogie Nights. Anyway thanks once again for this gem.
And yes SG1 ...great show...i love it.funny, exciting, smart, (the 200th episode was a hoot)quality stuff, its a shame it being cancelled, though i got to say SG Atlantis is great. My must see show of the moment has to be the brilliant Battlestar Galactica...oh my god what a masterpiece..dark, gritty, political, dangerous...imaginatively breath taking...finally a totally grown up scifi show (though Babylon 5 gave it a good go) But yes SG1 is a great show, though i do miss Jack O'Neil towards the end...
anyway once more thankyou for the joy you bring...i love the blog and i love this show. all the best
Thanks for the show!
I originally bought his "March" album because I loved the song "No Myth" (probably like 90% of the people who also bought the album). I can remember not getting into the other songs on the album because they were pretty mellow in comparison.
Now that I am older and wiser, I can appreciate his songwriting skills much more.
On another note, I am amazed that you have access to the soundboards to make these recordings. Do you have special inside connections to do this? I'd love to learn how you do it...
p.s. did you by any chance also record the Honeydogs set from the same day...that i'd love to hear..
jay you are al over the place man. ;)
it was michaels vocals on One that made me go find out who he was, which led to me getting his records. I was like, who is singing these fantastic background parts that i cant get out of my head!
oh and I LOVED Babylon. Ive got every episode on VHS (yes VHS). Battlestar is also brilliant. I watched S1 and the first couple of S2, have the rest but havent made it back there yet. Be sure to check out Doctor Who if youve never seen it. Not as adult, but still very very good.
And YES I have the Honeydog set. However, I havent tagged any of the songs, cause I have no idea what they are called. If you can help me figure them out I will post it soon. I was just thinking about their set last night. You can AOL IM me at Sunshower4242
steve - i use several methods. atypically i will email a band in advance, this usually works for most independent bands who are very cool with taping and are usually great people to boot.
other times (as with these shows) I just ask the band before the go on - can i tape? i also keep up with up and coming bands so ive taped bands that are now big(ger), when they still allowed taping.
the key is always to show up at the venue prepared. i carry around 4 sets of cables so that i can patch into any type of soundboard, or another persons deck (occasionally i get beat to the board and use this method.)
let me know if you end up taping bands!
on honeydogs. worked it out ;) it will be up in the next week.
What is the brand/model of tape deck that you use? I think I'm going to need to take a run down to the local electronics store this week!
magnolia bafflement debafflised. i didn't think of backing vocals..nice.
i too have all the babylons on vhs!! being in england i know the new doctor who very well (saw david tennet opening a garden fete in crouch end last summer- i live in crouch end and can see alexandra palace fro my street)i have them on dvd as well..overall i think the christopher eccelston series is better..more edger and with fewer so so episodes..overall the reivention is a sucess..though losing Rose is a shame....though do not be tempted by the torchwood spin off..it is really quite poor. the other scifi show i really like in recent times is Firefly..shame theres only one series and the film serendipty.......
great news about the honeydogs im looking forward to hearing it greatly. one small question the first song on the penn post has a couple of small jumps i believe..is this on the master or is it something else...its just wonderful anyway..as stunning as the Judes quality wise..it dont get no better than this....thanks once again.
steve - microtrack 24/96 - its a compact flash harddrive recorder. Go look at the very bottom post on the december 2005 archives, i write all about it and give links etc.
its awesome, able to move the recordings in wav file directly to my hard drive via a usb cable.
jay - totally agree on eccleston, though i have to disagree on torchwood. with a couple of exceptions (day one primarily) i thought it was a pretty awesome series. that and im originally from cardiff, so its awesome to see my town displayed in such a beautiful way ;)
firefly of course was fantastic - ive been a whedon fan for years. did you see yesterdays ep of the Office directed by him?
ya, on Penn, I was recording with a minidisc at the time and those annoying bumps are on the master - sorry dude. ill have honeydogs up later!!
Thank You very much for live performance (special thanx goes to Jay who mentioned this link in his post:)
Michael Penn was first artist on MTV Unplugged seria - is any chance to find video with it?
